Tunku Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hajjah Sofiah Jewa is a niece of “Bapa Kemerdekaan Malaysia” Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and a cousin of His Royal Highness the Sultan of Kedah, is a practising advocate & solicitor and an accomplished writer having published numerous legal literary works over the years including Public International Laws – A Malaysian Perspective (in 1996) and Malaysian Election Laws (in 2003).

She was called to the English Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1970 and holds two post graduate degrees, namely, the Master of Laws (LLM) and the Doctor of Philosophy in International Law (PhD) from the University of Miami. She was a member of the Faculty of Law at the University of Malaya from 1976 to 1982 where she taught Public International Law, Malaysian Legal System, Equity and Trusts.

In 1996 as a partner in her legal firm, she assisted the Malaysian Government in the drafting of the Civil Aviation Regulations 1996. In 1993, she served as a member of the Team of Legal Counsel appointed by the Prime Minister to advise the Malaysian Government on the Malaysia-Singapore Water Dispute. Tunku Sofiah was made the first lady Justice of the Peace in Kelantan by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Kelantan in 1990. In 2000, she was awarded the Dato’ Setia Diraja Kedah (DSDK) by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Kedah.

His Royal Highness the Sultan of Kelantan bestowed upon her the Dato’ Paduka Jiwa Mahkota Kelantan Yang Amat Mulia (DJMK) that same year. In 2002, Tunku Sofiah founded the Yayasan Tun Suffian Berdaftar  and sits on its Board of Trustees which includes former Chief Justice of Malaysia Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin bin Hj Abdullah as Chairman and Minister of Culture and Arts Datuk Seri Utama Dr. Rais bin Yatim.
