Prof. Dr Engku Rabiah Adawiah
Prof. Dr. Engku Rabiah Adawiah is a distinguished honorary professor at the IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIiBF), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She holds an LLB (first class honors), an LLB (Shari’ah) (first class honors), and a Master of Comparative Laws (MCL) from IIUM.
In 1998, she achieved her PhD in law from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom. Currently, she imparts her expertise to postgraduate students at IIiBF, focusing her research on the Islamic capital market, Islamic banking and finance, Islamic insurance or takaful, and the Islamic law of transactions.
Her extensive publications encompass books, articles in local and international journals, periodicals, as well as chapters in books and proceedings. She has delivered presentations at numerous conferences, seminars, workshops, and in-house training sessions on Islamic banking, finance, and capital markets.
Prof. Dr. Engku Rabiah Adawiah has previously served as a member of the Shari’ah Committee for several financial institutions. Presently, she is a member of the Syariah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia (Central Bank of Malaysia), the Securities Commission Malaysia, the Labuan Financial Services Authority (Labuan FSA), and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Additionally, she is an independent Shari’ah advisor for Islamic securities (sukuk) issuance, approved by and registered with the Malaysian Securities Commission.
Notably, she serves as a member of the Shariah Board of Labuan Re and Gen Re, and the Shariah Board for Khazanah for four of its exchangeable sukuk. Prof. Dr. Engku Rabiah Adawiah is also affiliated with the Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (MAIWP), serving as a council member of the Khadijah International Waqf Foundation, and as a board member of AWQAF Holdings.
Her outstanding contributions to Islamic finance have garnered significant recognition, including being awarded twice for the Most Outstanding Individual Contribution to Islamic Finance by Deloitte in 2004 and 2014 at the Kuala Lumpur Islamic Finance Forum (KLIFF 2014).
As a female Shari’ah scholar in Islamic finance, she has consistently been listed among influential women in the field, receiving accolades such as being ranked in the Top 10 Women in Islamic Finance (2014 and 2017), Top 20 Women in Islamic Finance (2017), and Top 10 Most Influential Women in Finance (2017), where she secured the 4th position. Furthermore, she has been ranked as the 3rd Most Influential Woman in Islamic Finance in 2018 and 2019, and the 2nd Most Influential Woman in Islamic Finance in 2020 and 2021 during the WOMANi Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony by Cambridge IF Analytica Limited.
